Going Green on Holiday

Many people are interested in going green these days.  While being green at home can be fairly easy in terms of recycling and re-using products, while on holiday, it can be a bit more difficult.  For example, the carbon footprint created by airplanes is quite high, as is the fact that most trains, taxis, buses, and other forms of transportation use fossil fuels.  While using public transportation can help save on fuel, it’s sometimes not the best way of getting around while on holiday.  

One of the things you can do to go green while on holiday is to look for eco-friendly hotels.  While these hotels may not be available in all areas, if you find one, you will love staying in it.  These hotels use many recycled materials and all-natural materials in their products, including linens, towels, and more.  Don’t think they’re not luxurious, either—some of these hotels are just as amazingly comfortable as other five star resorts and hotels.  If you can’t stay at an eco-friendly hotel, you can still make your lodging somewhat green by asking the cleaning crew to only change your bed linens and towels every few days

Packing lightly is another way of going green on holiday.  The heavier your bags on, the more stress and weight they put on transportation.  This, in turn, requires more energy to fuel the transport.  It also results in heavier bags for you to carry upstairs or lug to the airport or train station.  

Instead of renting a car, a green friendly option is to rent a moped.  These little scooter-type devices can be fuel powered or electric powered.  The electric powered ones are obviously the ones that are more green-friendly.  However, be certain you get motorbike insurance if you rent one of these great vehicles just in case.  You don’t want to end up paying for a destroyed moped.

In today’s modern world, digital cameras are all the rage.  They’re also much more environmentally friendly than disposable cameras or cameras that use film.  Digital cameras are also easier for you because you won’t need to carry around canisters of film.  Instead, one digital camera can often hold several hundred photos if not more, and camera memory cards are so small and cheap that you can purchase several and have enough space to hold a thousand pictures or more.  You can also take videos with most digital cameras.  Also, remember to really make your photography green, you should use rechargeable batteries if your digital camera needs them (some require charging at an electric outlet).

Renting a Moped

If you are someone who likes to travel, and you are always looking for a new and exciting way to visit an area, then renting a moped could be the perfect way to accomplish this.  For many people the idea of travelling across a foreign terrain in a rental car or motorcycle may be a little troubling; however, it could be too large of an area to simply cover by riding a traditional bicycle.  If this is the case, then the low power of a moped may be just the thing to help you see the area in style while still having time to take in the sights and navigate around on your own terms.

Just like with other rentals, you will want to be sure that you take out some form of moped insurance so that you can be sure that your vacation plans will not be ruined if there is some kind of accident or other problem.  Even if you think that it is an unnecessary addition that will just cost you more money, you need to make sure that you are adequately covered.  Not to mention the fact that your insurance plans for automobiles will probably not extend to mopeds, and you could also face problems if you are in a foreign country.  By getting the appropriate moped insurance you can at least rest a little easier knowing that you are obeying the local laws and that you are covered against any liability problems you could encounter.

Something else to consider if you are planning on using a moped to get around on vacation is the area in which you want to explore.  It is important to note that mopeds do not generally go over 50 km/r or 30 mph, depending on which measurement standard you are going by.  Because of this you will probably want to plan out a route that does not force you to drive on any major thoroughfares as the lower speed of the moped could cause some traffic problems.

One way to make sure that you are getting the most enjoyment out of your individual moped experience is to map out specific areas that you will want to visit while you are in the area, and then find routes to get to them that will allow you to take in the countryside at a leisurely pace.  This way you can make sure that you are getting the most out of your moped rental while at the same time being able to see more of the area that you are visiting without having to rely on outside transportation.
